Have Questions about the first tee of Hawaii or our programs?

OUR MISSION:

To impact the lives of young people from all backgrounds by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

WHAT IS THE FIRST TEE OF Hawaii?

We are a youth development organization headquartered in Honolulu and striving to serve all the hawaiian islands through in-school and after school programs as well as on-course programs. Our curriculum helps young people develop golf and life skills in a positive learning environment, and promotes a healthier community through responsibility and stewardship.

WHERE DOES PROGRAMMING TAKE PLACE?

We currently host class at three primary golf courses on Oahu, and soon Maui and the Big Island!

Visit our LOCATIONS page to see all the options.

We encourage you to visit and patronize each of these supporting facilities outside of regular program time, but please contact our office directly with questions about The First Tee.

HOW DO I ENROLL?

To sign up for the program, please visit the REGISTRATION page, where you will find the schedule of upcoming sessions and registration dates. The registration link will be active approximately 6-8 weeks prior to the next session, and class schedules are available to view 2 weeks prior to that date.

Classes fill quickly, so mark your calendar for upcoming registration dates. Select the best available option, and if your first choice is not available, be sure to submit a waiting list request.

Once you have created an account, the process only takes a few minutes each subsequent season. Each participant may enroll in one class per season, but there are plenty of other opportunities for practice and play outside of scheduled class time.

WHAT LEVEL SHOULD WE CHOOSE?

All participants begin with The First Tee at either the Player or Teen levels. From there, players progress at their own pace, which can be very quickly for those with experience, and at a more modest pace for those who are new to the material.

The curriculum begins with foundational Core Values such as: confidence, perseverance, and respect (for others, yourself, and your surroundings). Practice with these gets each player started on the right path toward a healthy long-term relationship with golf, learning, and goal-setting.

There is no rush to advance through the program. We also believe that participants of all abilities can progress through the levels successfully, so don’t worry about falling behind. The role of our coaches is to support each player in the development of new skills and in the pursuit of their goals.

MORE QUESTIONS:

WHAT ARE THE CLASSES LIKE?

Classes are organized in groups of 6-18 students, and are led by 2-5 staff coaches and volunteers. Each class meets weekly with a duration of approximately one hour, depending on the level and season. Education is “progressive” with Golf Skills and Life Skills seamlessly integrated into each activity. Assessments are made several times each session to measure and encourage individual progress; these will include both golf and life skills, and can be verbal, behavioral, written, or performance-based. Meet the standard age requirements, learn the curriculum, pass your tests, and you could be on your way to the next level in The First Tee Life Skills Experience!

DOES MY CHILD NEED GOLF CLUBS?

Junior clubs, golf balls, and learning equipment is provided for your junior golfer to utilize. If a junior golfer has their own golf clubs, we encourage them to bring those to practice.

WHAT SHOULD PARTICIPANTS BRING TO CLASS?

All equipment is provided, but it is important to come to class well-rested, nourished and wearing appropriate clothing.  Appropriate clothing consists of: a collared shirt, khaki pants, and any type of athletic shoes. We spend all of the class time outdoors, so proper footwear and sun protection is a necessity. No slippahs (sandals, flip-flops or open-toed shoes for our mainland transplants) are allowed.

WHAT AGE AND ABILITY LEVEL DOES THE PROGRAM INCLUDE?

All young people between the ages of 5 and 18 are encouraged to enroll, regardless of experience, skill, or maturity level. From there, each player will progress at his/her own pace.

Class size, age, and curriculum vary according to the class your child is enrolled in. All students begin at the PLAYER level then progress to PAR level of the program. At these levels, we focus on introductory golf instruction and interpersonal skills. The next level, is BIRDIE. At this level, we provide more advanced instruction and focus on goal setting. The EAGLE level is designed for students who have been with The First Tee for a minimum of 3 years and practice regularly outside of The First Tee. At this level, our most advanced golf curriculum is delivered as well as our life skills curriculum which is focused on resiliency and planning for the future.

CAN MY CHILD MISS ANY CLASSES?

As a youth development program, we teach and reinforce the nine core values: two of which being responsibility and perseverance. Attending classes regularly is an easy way to practice those values. In the case of an emergency, we do understand and excuse those absences. Unfortunately, if two or more classes are misses, the student will be dropped from the session.

ARE THERE ANY PERKS OF JOINING as a member of THE FIRST TEE?

Each calendar year an individual child membership to the First Tee of Hawaii is offered for $60.  There are many benefits of The First Tee Experience. Our goal is not only to improve your childs golf game but to aid in character development by reinforcing the values inherent to the game of golf. Additional benefits include: Family activities, discounts at First Tee Hawaii Play Golf Days, discounts at First Tee Hawaii golf tournaments.  To show your support, each child member will receive a polo shirt, hat, water bottle, and a First Tee of Hawaii Drawstring Backpack.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT THIS PROGRAM?

There are several opportunities to contribute to The First Tee of Hawaii. If you are interested in coaching or volunteering please contact Stephen Small for more information. If you would like to make a donation to the program, we are grateful to receive your assistance!  Please contact Kellan Anderson.   You may want to purchase a Players Golf Card, which provides substantial discounts at Hawaii golf courses to Hawaii residents and military members.  The Payers Golf Card primary beneficiary is The First Tee of Hawaii.

JUNIOR GOLF CLUBS AND WHAT SHOULD I BUY?

When looking for junior clubs, be sure to purchase clubs based on your child’s height, not their age. A quick and easy measurement of which clubs are appropriate would be to take the 7 iron out of a set of junior golf clubs and hold it perpendicular to the floor. The end of the golf club should be just below the childs’ belly button.

WHERE ARE SOME LOCATIONS WHERE MY CHILD COULD PRACTICE OUTSIDE OF THE FIRST TEE?

There are several driving ranges within the area where your child can practice. A driving range is alocation to practice ones golf skills. Typically, you would buy a bucket full of golf balls which can be purchased at the “Pro Shop” or sometimes out of a machine next to the driving range.  Your child could also practice at a few local golf courses!

Even More Questions:

MY CHILD HAS ALREADY PLAYED GOLF. WHAT LEVEL SHOULD THEY CHOOSE?
All participants, regardless of golf knowledge and experience, start at the PLAYer level. The reason for this is The First Tee’s proprietary curriculum, called the Life Skills Experience, is not just about golf skills, but Core Values and Life Skills integrated with golf skills and knowledge. If your child has played golf before, or is already competitive, please contact your Program Director to discuss their progress through our program.

MY CHILD’S BIRTHDAY IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SESSION, CAN THEY PARTICIPATE IN THE HIGHER LEVEL?

Yes!  As long as your participant meets to minimum required age during the program session they can participant in the higher level.

I HAVE SIBLINGS WHO WOULD BE IN DIFFERENT CLASSES CAN’T I JUST HAVE THEM PARTICIPATE TOGETHER?

Much like other sports, we require participants to participate in their age range.  This will create a better experience for each of your children as the lessons they will receive will be reflective of their ability to process the skills they learn on and off the golf course.

MY CHILD HAS BEEN PLAYING GOLF FOR MANY YEARS, WILL THEY BE STUCK IN A CLASS WITH BRAND NEW GOLFERS? OR VICE VERSA

Through The First Tee’s Coach’s Program our instructors are taught to deliver our classes in a mastery-driven environment, meeting young people where they are and getting the best out of them and their golf skills.

IF MY CHILD IS 7, WILL THEY BE RECEIVING THE SAME EXACT LESSON EVERY SEASON UNTIL THEY TURN 10?

Each season, our coaches mix up their lesson plans to continue to create a fun and engaging experience working to improve each child’s proficiency of their golf skills.  While our core values, life skills, and healthy habit remain the same, our coaches will work with participants to create a learning environment that exposes young people to the skill, then get them to apply the skills, to finally mastering the skill on and off the golf course.  This process takes time and cannot be mastered in one 10 weeks session.

MY CHILD PROGRESSED TO A HIGHER LEVEL IN THE FIRST TEE IN THE PAST.  WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Based upon your child’s age, they will be in a class where they will be receiving the curriculum that meets the cognitive ability of their age.  Our objective is to allow them to master both the golf skills and life skills they learn through the curriculum.  Participants will periodically be exposed to checkpoints during the session to track their improvements on a season to season basis.
